The City Reading Room first had opened its doors to its readers in 1876 at the Town Council Building in 105, Grecheskaya Street. To use magazines and newspapers was free of charge therefore the gymnasium students (boys and girls among whom A. P. Chekhov was) were glad to attend regularly the reading room. Many years later giving many good pieces of advice on acquiring books for the library holdings he was persistently advising to subscribe to magazines, and not only books for attendees and readers of the reading room. Since 1911 and until now the Reading Hall has been arrangedat the library building built in 96, Petrovskaya Street according to thearchitect F. O. Schechtel’sdesign.

THE READING HALL HAS GOT:

  • more than 50 000 editions available,
  • 2 300 copies of handboooks including encyclopedias and dictionaries,
  • series of books on history are easily accessible to readers from the shelves,
    Any resident of Taganrog may make use of the services of the reading hall being 14 years old.
